Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe how alcoholic inpatients recognize their alcoholism and to understand it from the patient¡¯s point of view.

Data was gathered through an in-depth interview and participant observations for 2 to 3 times from May 2006 to January 2007. Data was analyzed with Colaizzi¡¯s (1978) phenomenological methodology.
Results: Five categories emerged from 10 theme clusters. The five categories were: ¡®Gives an acme feeling¡¯, ¡®Gives a free feeling¡¯, ¡®Gives ambivalence feeling¡¯, ¡®Hope to stop¡¯, and ¡®Could not control¡¯.
