Recognition of Alcohol in Alcoholic Inpatients

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe how alcoholic inpatients recognize their alcoholism and to understand it from the patient¡¯s point of view.

Methods: The participants were 10 alcoholic patients who were admitted to a hospital in D-city. The age range was from 35 to 60 years old. Data was gathered through an in-depth interview and participant observations for 2 to 3 times from May 2006 to January 2007. Data was analyzed with Colaizzi¡¯s (1978) phenomenological methodology.

Results: Five categories emerged from 10 theme clusters. The five categories were: ¡®Gives an acme feeling¡¯, ¡®Gives a free feeling¡¯, ¡®Gives ambivalence feeling¡¯, ¡®Hope to stop¡¯, and ¡®Could not control¡¯.

Conclusion: The results of this study show that nurses should contribute support and understand alcoholic inpatients. They should also provide educational information necessary to hospital workers for understanding mental health.
